Contax Tvs Review at Steve's Digicams

Well, it seems that TVS Digital didn't get good press from Steve's Digicams. And actually, he's not such a brand fetishist who would just trash a brand like Contax or Leica just because it has that name...

Minolta Announce Dimage Scan Elite 5400

The scanner sounds very interesting. When I think about the quality of the Minolta scanners I had direct or indirect contact with (Scan Elite, Scan Dual III, and Scan Multi II), the new Minolta could be a real dream device for 35mm. (Of course, it doesn't work for me because of medium format - I need the 6x9 cm scanning area of the Multi II).

Olympus Stylus 400/300 Digital Reviews

That sounds really quite interesting, like a digital replacement for an Mju II. But it's not an option as a replacement for my Contax T

Polaroid 600 SE completed

I recently finally tracked down the last important piece for the Polaroid 600 SE: a 6x9 roll film back. Now the camera is complete. I think I'll take some photos of all the equipment soon and post them here. Really fine gear!

Finally! FULL review of Kodak DCS Pro 14n

A very interesting detailed test of the Kodak camera with a few references to the Canon EOS 1Ds.

I found the original article at Imaging Resource News Page.

Luminous Landscape has a brief comparison test Canon 1Ds vs Kodak DCS 14n

And the results don't look good for Kodak at all. Higher nominal resolution, but in the image comparisons rather lower effective resolution and noticeable artifacts and noise at 400 ISO. Not exactly an impressive result for the Kodak camera. Kodak will need to do significantly better than that.

War on War

2-150-150.png

The Schockwellenreiter links to websites with images that show war in its actual brutality. On one hand, to a website with excerpts from Ernst Friedrich's: War against War, and on the other hand, a link to This is War, a website with war images that news outlets simply don't show. Images that are far too easily suppressed and forgotten.

Too bad. Tiffany was a very interesting software that dated back to the NextStep era. It's really a shame when something like that disappears.

Olympus E System from the show floor

It seems to be slowly becoming something, the Olympus box. But what it will really be remains to be seen.

Minolta DiMAGE Xt

Minolta's doing it again, just like with the Dimage 7 (i and Hi). No sooner is the new model out than a newer model comes along a short time later - here the Dimage X, Xi and now Xt. Somehow, as a buyer, I'd feel a bit foolish if cameras weren't even current for half a year anymore.

Leica with new old camera

Just read that Leica is coming out with a Leica MP, an M6 with better finish, better build quality and finally fixed rangefinder flare problem. Nice. Although I don't really want to know what this beast will cost.

Unfortunately, no information to be found on Leica's own site yet.

Pentax *ist D

Hmm. What does that bring? Well, at least it would be cool to put old, classic K lenses on the Digi :-)

Addition to the Camera Collection

Well, soon a Kodak DC 4800 digital camera will probably be adding to my collection of unnecessary photo equipment.

Why that one in particular? Well, it has image quality that's generally considered quite good, relatively conventional operation (ok, only three selectable apertures, but still - and exposure compensation via its own dial instead of silly menus) and the zoom is a 28-84 instead of those silly 38-whatever lenses in other digis.

I mean, it's true: what's the point of a digital camera if its focal length only goes from normal focal length (ok, somewhat wider than normal, but the difference isn't really that big) to telephoto? I occasionally need wide angle, and constantly screwing on a converter is annoying.

My E-100RS will certainly still have its place, but especially for the stuff in my photo blog, the Kodak certainly isn't impractical.

Let's see what comes of it.

Canon's new digital SLR

Hmm. Somehow that doesn't sound like what some might have been waiting for.

Sample FinePix F700 Images at DPReview

That does indeed look like a real improvement. The dynamic range of digital technology is really a genuine limitation, especially for someone who works a lot with negative material (slide photographers are already predisposed to this).

Nikon Coolpix SQ - Quick Preview

Cute. I kind of like it somehow. I'll have to take a closer look at it when it becomes available. The DImage is admittedly smaller, but the image quality is too mushy to want to deal with it. Maybe Nikon offers something better there.

Photo walk at the Dortmund-Ems Canal

With the weather today I simply couldn't resist and walked home early along the canal. Unfortunately too early, the sunset was only due in the city, with the usual problems of seeing enough sky between tall buildings. But otherwise the result isn't so unsatisfying. Except that I finally want spring so that a few more colors come into play. Yellow-gray-brown nature is somewhat depressing. ![5-100-100.jpeg][P1] ![6-100-100.jpeg][P2] ![7-100-100.jpeg][P3] ![8-100-100.jpeg][P4] ![9-100-100.jpeg][P5] ![10-100-100.jpeg][P6] Here you can find the original article.

iPhoto has stupid ears

As soon as you edit an image with iPhoto and export it again, iPhoto messes with the EXIF data. Afterwards, there are suddenly invalid tags and type codes in there, which EXIF.py (which I use to read the EXIF data) complains about. Stupid idea.

Picture blog as a supplement to photo blog

I've now - purely by chance, because my software can now manage images - created an image blog alongside my other photo posts. There's not much in it yet, but I've decided to use the digital camera more often and slowly fill it up.

Now the stressful search for titles begins again ... and all of this without a value chain!

Just posted! Olympus C-5050 Zoom review

Well, it was my camera of choice for upgrading my old digital camera. Until I spent the money on the Contax instead

Still, in my opinion, a very interesting camera because it combines good performance with a small form factor and is at least reasonably easy to use - especially the control dial makes things much easier than the four-way controller that was previously used extensively. And the flip display is nice too.

Che Guevara - the Revolutionary as Photographer

A perhaps somewhat unusual exhibition. The image with Che's head is well known. But that he also stood behind the camera, perhaps less so.

Konica and Minolta Merge

Konica and Minolta merge - hmm. This could get interesting, especially if Minolta puts old know-how into the Konica Hexar RF. Plus, something could happen in the digital sector too. Let's wait and see.

Microdrive gets a major capacity boost

Microdrive gets a major capacity boost - neat, 4GB Microdrives. Not only interesting for photography (although of course having larger storage media is a blessing for current high-end digital cameras), but also for example for the OpenBrick. Cool.

Polaroid Dust and Scratch removal

Polaroid Dust and Scratch removal - a free utility from Polaroid that's supposed to make it easy to remove dust and scratches. In addition to normal use, there's also a plugin mode for Photoshop included. Worth taking a look at (I haven't tried it yet). By the way, the installer is pretty dumb - it searches all mounted volumes for plugin folders, but of course can't find "additional modules". Rarely such a dumb idea, especially with my 120 GB Firewire disc ...

First test results with the Polaroid filter: not bad, it determines its own masks based on damage markings and removes elements in that area by blending with the surroundings. So exactly what you need. Ok, if I open an image of several people and the filter then wants to remove someone's glasses as scratches, that's a bit overzealous, but the idea itself isn't bad in principle. I think I'll give that a try soon when I scan dusty negatives again.

The Polaroid 600SE is one of my cameras. Tony is always a bit hard to find, so here's a link to his shop. You'll find lots of interesting information about the system from him. And I can only confirm one thing: the Polaroid 600 SE is a great camera. A photo album full of Fuji 100 B really makes an impression...

Photo albums on the OUT e.V. server

Photo albums on the OUT e.V. server now automatically create an RSS feed of new images, so these can be subscribed to in a news aggregator like "Radio Userland". This way you can easily keep track of where new photos have been added, even with photo albums.

The XML URL for the RSS feed can also be extended with a second parameter "&count=NN" to select the number of current images. The default is 10, which should be sufficient. I may make some optimizations to the server software later to keep transfers and CPU load from getting too high.

A few image albums can be seen in my list of subscribed news feeds on the right (e.g. Leicaesk, hugo.f-2.org, the drf image critique pages).

Cat jumping - somewhat dark, but still a nice picture from The Witch - Juttas photo albums. You can see the technique in the light arc in the background, she probably moved along. Not so easy to do with a manual focus camera. Found at The Witch - Juttas photo albums.

One of my images made from ropes and pulleys. I like this album somehow, even though the images themselves don't convey much meaning, but rather serve the presentation of form and light play. Not every image has to convey a message...

Gretag before insolvency? - oh no, that doesn't look good. I'm glad I decided on the Color Spyder, Gretag's product could now face some difficulties in the long term. It's a shame anyway, their calibration systems have a good reputation.

Tips for Scanning Minox Films

With the Minolta Dimage Scan Pro, there are direct 8x11mm scan masks, and thanks to the high resolution, this scanner is well-suited for Minox film. With the Minolta Dimage Scan Multi II (which I have), unfortunately there is no direct option. But the Universal Holder UH-M1 comes with a filter mask that you can cut yourself, and that should work as well. If necessary, you can also use your own filter mask made from thin opaque plastic or cardboard, which is used in the standard medium format holder MH-M1. However, it is important to use the film mask so that light doesn't come through next to the negative and overexpose the image itself. With the Multi II, it is also important to switch to 35mm multiformat so that it scans with high resolution - with medium format it scans with a wider scan line, but with lower resolution as a result.

Just posted! Canon EOS-1Ds review - okay, now DPreview has their final test report on the 1Ds online too. Pixelnhance has a new version

Pixelnhance has a new version that makes it easier to adjust the maximum dynamic range in an image than before (simply double-click on the histogram). Pixelnhance is altogether a very nice image editing software that is particularly ideal as a complement to iPhoto.

The difference between Contax-AE and Contax-MM lenses is actually just a small nose on the outside of the lens bayonet. This nose presses down a small lever on the outside of the camera's bayonet. When this happens, the camera recognizes an MM lens. You can also press this lever by hand, and then you can see that the camera allows Tv, for example, as a selection option and uses it. The thing is: this also works in the image results! Good AE lenses (especially the prime lenses) actually also function as MM lenses when the small lever is moved! According to Zeiss, MM lenses additionally have smoother aperture mechanisms so that the aperture automation always works reliably; using an AE lens as an MM can therefore cause problems. I would bet less on the — of course — threatened defects, but rather on underexposure due to imprecisely closing apertures. After all, I've also noticed that my Tokina 17mm sometimes reports incorrect aperture values (9.5 and 13) to the camera via the aperture simulator in the upper apertures 11 and always in 16. That's just the disadvantage of mechanical transmissions — they need to be absolutely precise. But if you have no scruples, you can try using your AE lens as an MM and let me know if everything went smoothly.
