rawson.js - a camera raw previewer in javascript. Jupp. A RAW module for JavaScript. It's crazy what can be built with JavaScript. Although, after the PC emulator running in the browser that boots Linux, nothing should surprise me anymore.

Samsung: Compact camera EX2F with extra bright lens - Golem.de. It then came completely unexpectedly out of the blue into play. I don't think anyone had it on their radar - if I were still looking for an interesting compact camera, this would be one of the more interesting devices alongside the Sony RX100. However, for me, the GF3 has now taken the place of compacts, and even the RX100 can't keep up with it.

Blackmagic Design: Blackmagic Cinema Camera. Wow, that thing is really cool. So to speak, the mirror-less video option for Canon, one could say - because it has an EF mount. It looks really sleek, the price of $3000 without SSD though.

Emmerich am Rhein and Rees

On the day of our return journey, we stopped in Emmerich am Rhein and in Rees and took a small tour on the Rhine in Rees. A nice end to the weekend.

Open-Air Museum Arnheim

And on to the third day - the open-air museum in Arnhem. It is right next to the zoo and just as beautiful in a forest and meadow landscape, inside a tram runs and there are always small show performances. Really very nicely done.

Burgers Zoo

And here is the second day - pictures from Burgers Zoo, our main destination. As you can see, it all starts and ends with penguins. Perfect beginning and end.

Impressions from Arnhem

Here's the beginning of the Pentecost weekend - impressions from the city center and the Rhine bank of Arnhem.

Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 X lens officially announced!. Ok, the lens looks really good now - I think I might be tempted. Because a brighter zoom with a bit more wide-angle could be very good for the GH1.

Exclusive premiere: The full Leica X2 review – Ming Thein | Photographer. Certainly, the X2 (especially together with the electronic viewfinder) will not run even approximately in the category "cheap", but somehow it sounds like a really good update to the X1. And compared to the, in my opinion, completely absurd overpriced M9-M, the X2 is at least roughly within the range of "could consider it if you have some money left over".

Bilderarchiv | rfc1437. My image archive was revised over the weekend and now comes with funny JavaScript gadgets for automatic tiling. Not really groundbreaking, but more interesting than the previous, rather boring format. jQuery Masonry is the main part of the work. Nice little JavaScript library. The most interesting part is probably the heuristic in my little plugin, with which I bring the images into portrait/landscape/square formats, so that the whole thing does not become too boring due to an excess of landscape formats. Unfortunately, there are still gaps in the image stream, where Masonry could actually become a bit smarter (and e.g. pull up small squares). Or I have to sit down again with the heuristic and make sure that the chances of gaps are reduced.

645 PRO app for iPhone offers access to lossless camera output but not Raw. Sounds quite interesting, but not so much because of the pseudo-RAW - there won't really be such huge differences - but because of the user interface, which is much closer to a normal camera and also provides a few more pieces of information. According to comments, however, it does drain the battery quite quickly.

Kenko extensions tube with full electronic control!. Woopdidoo. Ok, extension tubes are not the optimum in terms of performance, but still quite interesting, as they offer a relatively simple and usually cost-effective way to improve macro capabilities.

SynthCam for iPhone. Uses the camera's video feature to achieve a shallow depth of field effect. What it does is a stitch from many individual images, where defined areas (via tracking) become sharp and other areas become blurred through camera movement. Pretty cool stuff.

Depth of field. Good explanation of what depth of field really means mathematically. Quite interesting to read if you don't yet fully understand the relationships (Hint: the primary factor is the imaging ratio, everything else is just a function of it).

Cat Content

The Schockwellenreiter has recently shown the way, and I really can't resist the essential cat content in the blog world anymore. Health.

LensRentals.com - Undressing an NEX. Very interesting, a completely different look at a camera - at the innards. Even if it was somehow more interesting with the mechanical cameras earlier, I also find the "inner values" of the NEX quite impressive. Oh, and as a system, they have Linux (unfortunately still not hacked and opened).

Robin Wong has tested the Olympus E-M5 and posted a mountain of sample photos. Looks very promising already, and the dynamic range tests also show good results. It will be exciting to see when the first pixel-peeper sites jump in and publish measurements, but based on the samples I would say that the E-M5 comes - at least at the lower ISO values - quite close to the Sony NEX series in terms of dynamic range.

41MP Nokia 808 smartphone hints at pixel-binning future for small sensor cameras. I also raised an eyebrow at first reading - 41 megapixels in a phone sounds ridiculous, and Symbian doesn't really sound future-oriented. DPreview takes a closer look at what these 41 megapixels actually mean - the chip is significantly larger, so the pixels aren't really smaller than those in normal 8-megapixel phone cameras. Multiple pixels are combined to create a typical target image in the 5-8 megapixel range (the full resolution is also available as an option) to improve noise and other artifacts. Therefore, it is most comparable to the Foveon concept, where the pixels are simply placed in front of each other instead of next to each other. However, Symbian is not future-proof regardless of the photo part.

6: Sony infrared conversion service. Interesting - if I ever have a Sony (and have 250 euros to spare - so probably never), I could take advantage of this. Infrared photography without filters is quite interesting.

Carnival. And now please take off the paper noses, okay?

Juliana has never experienced anything like this before, so we went to the Rosenmontag parade in Münster. I have no idea when I last attended a carnival parade, it must have been over 30 years ago. Well, fortunately, the parade in Münster is largely staffed by Dutch carnivalists, otherwise it would have been quite boring and colorless. And you shouldn't expect current political comments - in Münster, no one had to change the carnival float because of a (former) federal president.

zenphoto-publisher - Lightroom 3 Publisher plugin for Zenphoto. Maybe I should take a look at this - with this I can export directly from Lightroom to ZenPhoto. I usually have my pictures in my blog, but for larger quantities it's a bit cumbersome, so an alternative site for galleries would be quite practical, especially since I can then integrate ZenPhoto into WordPress again.

"Collection Publisher" Lightroom Plugin. Hmm, that looks good - I could easily manage my Photos folder in Dropbox from Lightroom if you let it create virtual copies automatically (which you can specify in the Collections), you don't even step on each other's toes when it comes to changes (and it doesn't take up extra space in Lightroom, only in the Dropbox folder).

Aaseevergnügen

Inspired by the Alstervergnügen in Hamburg, we had our Aaseevergnügen today. Okay, it lasted a few days longer, and there were no sausage stalls or beer stands directly at the Aasee (although, as seen in the pictures, some Münster residents tried to set up), but there was definitely a lot going on. No surprise with this weather. And yes, I even dared to go out.

Back from Amsterdam

Back from the course, lost my mind and a few things in my notebook bag, which a Dutch car thief took with him when he broke into our car (no, not the mind, it just suffered in the three weeks before). Well. Life sucks sometimes.

Sony "approves" the launch the new hybrid AlphaNex mount camera (sort of fullframe NEX-7!). It's much more fun when you simply release new cameras instead of finally expanding the system. Somehow you might get the idea that Sony is spreading itself too thin with the new camera models. Sure, they are great - the 5N is really nice and the 7 sounds really good and this one also sounds interesting. But I can't help but notice that the 50/1.8 is still not available in Germany and some other lenses are also not yet available - and even if all the announcements are finally here, there are still big gaps in the setup. A system only truly comes to life when it can be used as a system - otherwise it is at best a kind of "configurable compact". And the system is actually too interesting to be parked on the sidelines. For me, this has led to a reorientation towards my Micro-4/3 equipment, because there is clearly more movement there at the moment (and thus the chance that the holes that bother me will be filled sooner).

Nice Impressions

Pictures from the Microsoft Dynamics AX Congress in Nice. Okay, not actually pictures from the congress, but more of Nice. Palms, Mediterranean flair, the Mediterranean Sea, and big yachts. Unfortunately, it was mostly dark, but that has never stopped me from taking pictures.

Men's toys in Nice

Extra post for extra cars. They were just standing there one day in front of the convention center. We didn't really understand why - at the time there was some kind of local assembly or something, but in addition, there were hordes of uniformed people around, the cars were there, lots of police. Maybe some regional bigwig was there and he was a classic car fan. The cars were nice to look at anyway.

Kodak sells Image Sensor Solutions business: Digital Photography Review. That doesn't sound good to me as a Leica M user. I hope my M8 lasts as long as possible and doesn't suffer from the digital component failures that were common with Kodak digital adaptations (I still think about my DCS 520 often).

Panasonic: Systemkamera GX1 mit Dreikern-Bildprozessor - Golem.de. Still a bit thin on information (as usual, but already more about it at dpreview), but Panasonic seems to really want to catch up with Olympus and certainly also Sony. It will be exciting again, the G3 has already shown at Panasonic what the newer generation can do and the GX1 is supposed to top that.
